🔭 “I miss the sea. Always everything comes back to it. As a child I loved those days of proletarian wonder as we gazed out to the Irish Sea. Now she speaks to me of my past, something that here I cannot capture. The only way is to return to the coast, to walk on the beach, to listen to the waves that in the night one cannot see. Music can, to some degree, let me walk on that shoreline once again. This album represents my Dreams of an English Coastline.”

Manchester native, Brno based Gary Rostock takes us into his memories using impressively crafted electronic ambient compositions named mostly after coastal locations and musically inspired by the likes of Basinski and Hecker. This is a move leftwards from Gary’s previous vocal based electronica, showing his wide musical spectrum and compositional range.

He says that Dreams of an English Coastline started as that moment when you first see a wide angle view of the sea, and I can feel this as the piece develops into a panoramic journey where the sea calls you with a mariner’s horn.

The Irish Sea is like the gaze that falls on the darkness of the sea as it stretches out before you, whereas Knott End and Morecambe Bay are a closer look at the areas surrounding the coastline, but in all three the presence of the sea as something that cries out to us, tempts us, is evident.

The Crest is just that: the point at which a wave reaches its highest level; listen and I hope you too will hear the waves as they rise. And The Tempest is... “How to turn prettiness sinister” noted Gary, stating that it’s “'almost ambient' leaning towards electronica” - for me as a listener it’s like the feeling of walking towards the coast and finally to the shore as the sound of the waves crashing during a storm get closer and closer.

Of course Verdant Rush is - with its whispering experimentation and images of bright or stormy clouds - so fragile. Like watching a sunset reflected on the water’s surface at the ocean’s horizon. And The Shoreline, with its breathlessness and gentle voice is full of the ebb and flow of the tides.

Dreams of an English Coastline is a deeply personal audio journey based on mental pictures of walking on the shores of the Fylde Coast and the fateful coming of the waves... Calm, relaxed and thoughtful; careful listening recommended.
